While Congress has been on "vacation" for the past two weeks, unemployment benefits have expired for an estimated 200,000 jobless individuals. Although the House and Senate have passed bills that would extend benefits for many months, America is still awaiting the reconciliation of these bills. Currently, Senator Tom Coburn (Oklahoma- R) has halted the bill, insisting that any additional benefits be paid for with offsetting budget cuts. This is the second time this year that a Republican Senator has held up unemployment benefits. Today, Senate overcame a procedural hurdle by further moving the one month extension that the House had already passed. Hopefully, this is a sign that Unemployment Benefits will be extended for the thousands of unemployed Americans that are so reliant on this money during these tough times.
